history
To be the eldest born into the McKenna family of Dublin, Ireland, one might expect a lot of expectations would be placed on the small child's shoulders. To some extend that was true, but for one little Charlotte McKenna, she lived very much sheltered against the reality of her family's situation. In the beginning anyway. Perhaps if she had been a son, things would have been different, but from the time she was just a child, her mother was adamant in trying to keep her children safe from her husband's dealings. It was never that simple, not when every aspect of their life came up against it. Charlotte was a perfectly happy child, content with being the oldest and falling in line when and where she was told. She adored her parents, but of the two, always seemed to gravitate more toward her mother. Her father at times, no matter how loving he was with his children, scared her, if only because she saw what a toll his "career" choice took on their mother.

Charlotte was eight years old when their family up and moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and while she was devastated to be leaving behind the only home she'd ever known, was assured by her ever-supportive mother, that the change would be good for them. Charlotte was in no position to argue, so armed with her parents and siblings, they settled into a home in South Boston. Life there wasn't much safer, but Charlotte made the adjustment just like her siblings. She was always a stubborn, willful child who liked things the way she liked them, and so rarely ever took the backseat to anyone. Her parents would bicker with her until they were all blue in the face, as storming off to her room was rarely an option that she took. Never the path of least resistance.

While her father would have been perfectly content for each of his children to follow him into living and dying by the Irish code, Charlotte would listen to her mother's quiet prayers for her. "You will do something great with your life. You will make us proud, no matter what you do." The hope in her words was never lost on Charlotte, and as much as she would have liked to please her father, her mother's gentle encouragement was always more prominent in her mind. Of course, her father insisted that each and every one of his children knew how to handle themselves in a fight, which was put to the test when she was ten and a neighborhood boy made fun of her "funny accent." She hit him in the face and gave him a bloody nose. At least he never bothered her again.

Adolescence was a bit of a trying time for Charlotte. She was never entirely sure where she wanted to draw the line in her own stubborn nature to rebel, or to follow a more "straight and narrow" path. Her own frustration of trying to balance the two often got to her, flaring up with that Irish temper of hers, the results could often be explosive. She reconciled within herself that she could do what was asked of her for the most part, but that didn't have to completely stifle what she wanted for herself. Yes, she was alongside her family every Sunday morning for church, but that didn't mean she wasn't going to make out with the senior who rode a motorcycle or get caught smoking behind the school, either. No matter how much she enjoyed seeing just how far she could push buttons, that never really deterred her from the goals she'd set out for herself.

Yale was the choice of school, and Charlotte worked hard as hell to get into the ivy league school. One thing she had always loved was learning and for a brief moment, she pondered the idea of becoming a teacher. The idea however, was put to rest when she realized that while she may not want to follow into the family business herself, there were ways to work along that line. She switched her major into pre-law, and studied criminal defense in law school for her specialty. She thrived in that area, and loved every second of it. Not only was she passionate about her work, but she was able to do something that would make her of value to those she considered her extended family.

If there was one thing that could shock Charlotte to her core, she would have never seen it coming. The call came in the middle of her night that her parents had died. No, not died, but had been shot at point blank range. It was a crippling blow, and one Charlotte didn't know how to recover from. She tried to remain the strong eldest sibling, keeping her family taken care of as best as she could, but the damage was done. The only thing she could even think to do to cope was throw herself into her work, to study harder, work longer, and become someone of value that they could have been proud of. It was all very good in theory, but really at the end of the day, all she wanted to do was drink until she couldn't see straight.

Upon graduating from law school, Charlotte moved away from the East coast, a place that constantly reminded her of the family she'd lost, and settled in Chicago. She began working at a big-name law firm, though junior associate wasn't entirely the title she wanted. It was easy enough however, for her to balance her work with somewhat destructive patterns, culminating in a torrid affair she should have known better than to partake in. Charlotte felt good for the first time since her parents' death, alive in ways she couldn't have done by working herself to death. One time turned into two, and then a dozen, and she stopped counting. She felt a balance in her life, but of course in her own stubborn nature would never admit that he had anything to do with that. It was easy because she didn't have to be one thing or another at the end of the day, just doing something because it was a little dangerous and made her feel alive.

Yet another of those cases where she got in far too over her head too quickly, and Charlotte found out she was pregnant. While she had very casually been dating another man, she was only sleeping with one, and she wasn't going to share the situation with him. She cut off her "relationship" with him, and in probably the most impulsive decision of her life, married the safe choice. No she didn't love him, not in a way t hat should be there for marriage and all that comes with it, but he was good to her, and would make a fine father. He was under no impression that her child was in fact his, but he didn't care. It should have been a chivalrous move that made Charlotte weak in the knees, but it wasn't. She just felt very ... indifferent.

Nothing else in her life was like being a mother, and the second her daughter was born, life took on a very different meaning for Charlotte. Part of her felt guilt for not allowing her daughter's father into the picture, but it was better (and safer) for all involved. She was happy in her life, glad for her work and her family, and overall good in her own space. Fate of course, wouldn't leave her alone for too long, and she found herself face to face with the temptation of her daughter's father staring her right in the face. Try as she might, her weakness for him took over any responsible bone in her body, and thus began (or rather, continued) a on-and-off affair with maybe the only man who ever knew her in the deepest sense of the word. It was wrong, but when "just one time" turned into two and so forth, Charlotte began to care less. Her gift of a silver tongue served her well both in the courtroom and at home, and she had an uncanny ability to talk herself out of a corner.

With her daughter now eight years old, she has bouts of being entirely faithful as a wife, and still other times when she is very much less than. One thing that never wavers is her devotion as a mother. She lives and breathes for her daughter, but she should be allowed just one little selfish thing, right? Her career has taken on a much more stable role since she began heading up a criminal defense section of an Irish-run law firm. She likes having her name on the door, and one thing she has had to promise herself, is that while she may technically be a part of criminal activity, she will never let it touch her family.

Before we can accept this one, we need you to account for the fact that the game is set in 2025 so her birth year would be different and we need some mention of how she ended up in Chicago. Thanks!
